Retirement Age – Born in 1970

1970 retirement ageWhat is my retirement age if I was born in 1970? (Updated March 2023)

There have been many changes to State pension age as well as proposals for changes which has made things very confusing for people.

For those born in 1970 there were changes both in the Pension Act 2007 and in the Pensions Act 2014.

If you were born in 1970 then your retirement age is 67. This was set out in the Pensions Act 2007 and confirmed in the Pensions Act 2014.

It is unlikely now that your State Pension age will be increased any further to age 68 although it is not impossible. The government have confirmed their commitment to give people 10 years notice of a change in their retirement age which would mean you would need to be notified by 2027 (as your current SPa is in 2037). As they have indicated that no further legislation will be passed until after the next independent review, that would not give 10 years notice to change your retirement date.

Yuo can check how much state pension you may be entitled to by using the government website forecast. You can find out more details here.

To check the retirement age for the year you were born, just enter your year of birth in the search bar in the right sidebar (or the very top menu bar on mobile devices).
